What if we could turn all the plastic waste we create on a daily basis into fuel to power our cars? A Washington, DC-based company called Envion claims it can do just that with a process that turns plastic into an oil-like fuel for just $10 per barrel. According to Envion, the resulting fuel can be blended with other components and used as either gasoline or diesel.

Mario considers the perils of living in 3D

After taking the Red Tube, it was too late to go back, even if he wanted. Luigi took the Green Tube and had vanished, leaving Mario surrounded by tall blades of grass and giant Amanita pantherina. Having just eaten scoop from the cap Mario considers the perils of living in 3D.

He sits on a moss patch and decides life is all about quantum retrocausality as his surroundings slowly become fuzzy…

MIT spin-off plans to manufacture cheap, efficient solar cells

Researchers from MIT have improved commercial solar cells that will soon be significantly cheaper and more efficient than those available today. Ely Sachs, a professor of mechanical engineering at MIT, predicts that by 2012 such solar cells will be comparable in price with coal, which is about $1 per watt.

1366 Technologies´ solar cells are made from multi-crystalline silicon - a material that is normally less efficient than top quality single-crystal cells, but significantly cheaper. However, with the improvements by Sach´s group, the multi-crystalline solar cells reach about the same efficiency as the single-crystal variety.

Ancient lava flows

Posted by MysticAlpaca

image

Here on Hells Half Acre Trail I explore an island of lava discovering the secrets of life’s survival in Idaho’s high desert while hiking along this 3/4 mile trail.

Molten rock forced upward for 30 to 50 miles through fissures in the Earth, has cooled into the hard lava found here.
Continued pressure from below has made great cracks in the contorted surface. This lava solidified only a few thousand years ago, and not very much soil covers it yet. But vegetation is getting a start, and unless new flows intervene, windblown soils will cover these rock layers.

Pacific Planet Northwest 2003 commissioned by Redmond Town Center.

It’s a nice warm day to walk and think about your place in the solar system and far to relaxing to worry about your place in the whole Universe.

Cirque Du Soleil sets up camp for Corteo at Marymoor Park

Get tickets now as these tend to sell out pretty fast. Date for Corteo is on April 24th, 2008. Here is a blurb of what to expect:

Corteo, which means “cortege” in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.

The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music, by turns lyrical and playful, carries Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.
